Letter for Lent: as Easter beckons

Dear friends

As I write this on a sunny Monday morning in the last week of February, it’s a lovely thought that Spring is just around the corner, with Holy Week now only a five week journey away: the journey through Lent is always a challenge and never easy for any of us.

This poem below was recently read during the Family Service on the first Sunday in Lent, 22nd February, Thinking Day :To Keep a True Lent by Robert Herrick in 1648.

Is this a Fast, to keep the Larder lean? and clean from fat of veals and sheep?
Is it to quit the dish of flesh, and yet still to fill the platter high with fish?
Is it to fast an hour, or ragg’d go, or show a down-cast look and sour?
No: ’tis a Fast to dole thy sheaf of wheat and meat unto the hungry soul.

It is to fast from strife and old debate and hate; to circumcise thy life; to show a heart grief-rent; to starve thy sin, not bin; and that’s to keep thy Lent.

These words sit well with Jesus’ words from St Matthew, also heard in Church on that Sunday which was Thinking Day, for Guides, Scouts and for us all as we think about the journey to the Cross, but always remembering with joy what happened on the Third Day.

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he as hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ Then the devil took him o the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down.  For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’

Much to think about. Lent gives us this annual opportunity. Do come to Church as Easter beckons. If you haven’t been for a while, Easter is the perfect time to reconnect, particularly in Holy Week when, with others, you will hear the Gospels [ see overleaf ] read aloud by fellow parishioners in an enriching devotional exercise, coinciding with the first printing in English of the New Testament 500 years ago in 1526 by William Tyndale.

I send my very best wishes to you for a very Happy Easter!

                                                                             John
